With the school year getting ready to start, our Corpus Christi eye doctor, here at Family Vision Associates, P.A., would like to remind you to schedule your child’s annual pediatric eye exam. This is especially important because many parents believe that the vision screening tests that are performed in schools is enough to diagnose vision problems. A vision screening only tests your child’s visual acuity. It does not diagnose functional problems with the eye or how your child processes visual information.
A children's eye exam tests more than your child’s visual acuity. It also tests depth perception, color blindness and tracking and teaming as well as hand/eye coordination. If you’ve noticed your child skipping words or lines or having trouble catching and throwing a ball, it may be due to an undiagnosed vision problem that has nothing to do with your child’s visual acuity.
Our Corpus Christi optometrist understands that the majority of the information your child absorbs is accomplished with his or her eyes. That’s why we perform eye exams on all ages of babies and children. We will also perform the correct type of exam for all ages, beginning in kindergarten all the way through high school.
Our Corpus Christi eye doctor will test your child’s visual acuity with either a Snellen eye chart, tumbling E chart or picture chart. Your child’s depth perception, ability to focus and track and team will also be tested along with your child’s hand/eye coordination. If any problems are found, our eye doctor will thoroughly explain them to you and recommend one or more treatment options.
