Glaucoma and Retinal Diseases: When to Have an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Exam

It’s not uncommon for people to experience vision changes by the time they turn 40. The OCT is a device that provides a detailed and in-depth 3D image of the eye’s internal structures. It actually takes a detailed image below the surface of the retina. The OCT exam can identify glaucoma and retinal diseases along with age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.  It’s important to note that up to 80 percent of blindness and vision impairment can be prevented with early detection.

At Family Vision Associates, we recommend having an OCT exam every two years with your regular eye and vision exam. If you’re over 40, we recommend a yearly exam. It’s also wise for those who are having trouble reading, difficulty seeing faces, seeing lines that are wavy or seeing empty patches in the center of vision to schedule an OCT exam. The OCT exam takes just a few seconds, and nothing touches the eye. Just a few eye drops are needed to dilate the pupils, and you’re done.

Family Vision Associates: Your Corpus Christi Optometrist

Family Vision Associates is your Corpus Christi optometrist who offers OCT exams. This modern digital technology allows our experienced optometrist to view the retina at the back of the eye to check for eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration. We also keep these high-resolution images to check the progression of eye disease and to monitor the effectiveness of treatment. If an eye disease is identified, treatment may include prescription eye drops or eye surgery. If you do need eye surgery, our optometrists always run advanced diagnostic testing to determine if you’re a good candidate for eye surgery.
